The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (which recently made headlines for blocking Microsoft’s $69 billion takeover of Activision Blizzard) will focus on learning large language models and generative AI similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT .
Large language models are artificial intelligence systems that learn from massive amounts of data to understand human speech and generate text-based responses to user queries. Technology has enormous potential to increase human productivity by reducing the time it takes to create text for marketing purposes or write code for applications. However, governments in many countries are alarmed by the rapid pace of development of AI systems and how they may affect the labor market.
On Thursday, the UK regulator released a statement announcing plans to study the impact of artificial intelligence systems on people, business and the economy, and further create “guidelines to support competition and protect consumers”.
“It is vital that the potential benefits of this technology are made available to UK businesses and consumers, while people remain protected from issues such as false or misleading information. Our aim is to help this new technology develop in a way that ensures open competitive markets and effective consumer protection,” said Sarah Cardell, Director General of the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
The CMA will gather “views and evidence from stakeholders” until June 2 and publish a report with its findings in September.
Earlier, the UK government asked regulators to check how well AI systems adhere to principles such as security, transparency and accountability. In March, the country unveiled its own approach to technology regulation – although there are no new rules, regulators are simply being asked to apply existing ones. The offers also do not mention the name ChatGPT.
