Police in the city of Calgary arrested suspects in connection with the theft of a telecommunications cable, as a result of which thousands of users were left without telephone connection and access to the Internet.
In the Canadian province of Alberta, two people were brought to justice on charges of theft of a communication cable. Calgary police noted that 2,056 users were left without access to the Internet or phone service as a result of the theft, and the amount of damage amounted to $276,000.
According to the Calgary Herald , on December 8, 2023, three suspects broke into several hatches located in the 2000 block of Glenmore Trail and Southwest Streets to steal cable.
On January 2, 2024, a home in the 3000 block of 37 South West Street was searched, where investigators found evidence of theft and resale of copper wire.
Jared John Hibert, 50, was charged with theft over $5,000, dealing in stolen property and two counts of failure to comply. Hibert is scheduled to appear in court on January 23.
Tamara Lynn Goerlbert, 40, was charged with theft over $5,000 and two counts of failure to comply. Gjorlbert is scheduled to appear in court on January 31.
The police assume that another perpetrator, whose identity has not yet been established, took part in the crime under investigation.
It should be noted that not so long ago, several Ukrainian telecom operators stated that in the second year of the war, the number of cable and equipment thefts increased, while the police did not act. However, it should be noted that in Ukraine there are cases of the arrest of thieves of telecommunication cables. For example, in 2020, the Lviv police caught two men stealing an internet cable.
