The American online retail giant Amazon is expanding its business in the field of cloud technologies by entering the market of European telecom services. As Reuters reports , about a million 5G customers of the operator Telefonica Germany (O2 Telefonica) will soon be transferred to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform.
This is the first case in the world when a mobile operator transfers its own basic network to a publicly available cloud infrastructure. Director of Technology and Information of O2 Telefonica Mallik Rao noted that by 2025-2026, the company plans to place at least 30-40% of its customers on AWS.
The basic network of the telecommunications operator, consisting of high-performance servers, ensures secure routing of data and calls. Transferring it to the public cloud will reduce costs, increase scalability, and enable maintenance without service interruptions.
Analysts predict rapid growth of the global cloud technology market in the telecommunications sector from $19.7 billion in 2021 to $108.7 billion in 2030. This will be a powerful driver for Amazon-sized players over the next 12 months.
To implement the project, AWS cooperates with Nokia, which will provide software, while the American company will be responsible for cloud infrastructure and services. Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed at this time.
