Engineers from Aston University have achieved a record speed of data transfer via wired internet. This was reported by the press service of the university.
Scientists managed to speed up fiber optic networks to 301 Tbit/s. This is about 4.5 million times faster than the average data transfer speed in the home Internet (69.4 Mbps). Such acceleration was achieved due to the expansion of the wavelengths used for information transmission.
For this, engineers have developed special devices (optical amplifiers) that expand the range of wavelengths on which fiber optic networks can operate. Regular wired internet uses waves in the C and L bands to transmit data, but the booster adds additional E and S bands to the internet.
Scientists compare it to the reproduction of colors on a screen. The more colors a screen can support, the more information can be conveyed on a single display. The same applies to wired networks: the more different waves, the higher the data transfer rate.
The authors of the article make it clear that their ideas can be applied everywhere, since it is not necessary to replace the cables themselves, but only to modernize the optical amplifiers used. In this way, humanity will be able to increase the speed of the Internet by many, many tens of times without any special costs.
